What makes a civilization?
The Search for a Lost Civilization
Looking through the eyes of Plato the world becomes a different place. Through his take on philosophy you mean? No, not the philosopher Plato of Athen's golden age, but the other Plato, or his "other side", if you will, which looked into the far ancient past, a prehistorian that pondered a time unrecorded, the memory of which now only survives in myths and legends. According to popular belief, Plato's great relative, Solon, a former elder statesmen of Athens, traveled to ancient Egypt to listen to the tale of a lost civilization that supposedly existed long before people officially recorded history. Many people know that famous story as the Atlantis myth. But Plato does not say or imply "myth" anywhere in his dialogues describing the prehistoric culture. Many cultures record similar myths in oral traditions of golden ages or epochs "long forgotten", including the mythic tales of India or the Zep Tepi of Ancient Egyptian Mythology.
The main aim of this site is to explore that world, via the "eyes of Plato", and give a much needed alternative view juxtaposed against the already well established mainstream archaeological and historical views of academia. The site will, of course, explore the traditional Atlantis story via Plato, as well as some of the other less credible and well known ones, such as the supposed occultic Mu and Lemuria. Do these have any real merit either. Perhaps just overly misguided and misrepresented legends of lost civilizations, shrouded in the fog of murky prehistory, lost civilizations which did exist in some form in the Pacific and Indian oceans, maybe even co-existed with an Atlantis type culture in some way.
All of these native myths of very ancient lost civilizations coming from all around the world seem to indicate that great catastrophes and floods caused these mysterious cultures to perish, never to be seen again. Recent science reveals that post Ice Age global melting may have fueled the inspiration for such myths 8000 years ago, see this page for more Ice Age geological info. These are scientists, not occultists, or romantics, lending support to the Atlantis story. Could these geological events, preserved in ancient memory through oral legends, then perhaps explain why no evidence, or very little, is left standing of these very remote cultures?
World Map of Mythical Lost Civilizations
New geological studies and extracted drill cores in places like the Mediterranean, reveal the past geographical environment that existed at the end of the last Ice Age, 8 000 years ago. Over 25 million square kilometers of primarily warm habitable dry land lay exposed above sea level, and became inundated, in a series of sudden catastrophic global floods. Ice Dams that held back large glacial lakes burst open, sending a volume of water the size of lake Ontario into the ocean in a matter of days. One of Graham Hancock's best books, Underworld: The Mysterious Origins of Civilization, explores the climatic upheavals occurring during that period.
